Tackling Sports Incontinence- A Guide for Female Athletes

Updated: Jun 19

With the increasing participation of women in sports, there is also an increase in the number of challenges they face. One such hidden challenge is sports incontinence. This condition is characterized by the involuntary loss of urine during physical activity. It affects a significant portion of female athletes, yet it remains undiscussed, mainly due to social taboos.

What causes sports incontinence?

A strong pelvic floor is crucial in counteracting the increased abdominal pressure occurring during high-impact activities. When the pressure within the abdomen exceeds the strength of the pelvic floor, urine leakage may occur. This imbalance is more pronounced in high-performance female athletes.

Surprisingly, despite affecting roughly 30% of female athletes, many suffer in silence and reluctantly step away from the sports they love, fearing societal judgment.

However, there is hope!

Understanding the importance of seeking help and addressing this issue is the first step towards effective management. When visiting a healthcare provider, it's crucial to undergo thorough examinations at rest and during physical activity.

During these examinations, healthcare providers assess various factors, like a detailed history of health conditions, assessment of posture, and a thorough pelvic floor examination.

Treatment

Some of the common protocols include-

  1. Pelvic Floor Muscle Training (PFMT): Exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles.

  2. PFMT with Biofeedback: EMG sensors provide real-time feedback, helping athletes better understand and control their pelvic floor muscles.

  3. Electrical Stimulation: Passive yet effective way to strengthen weakened muscles.

  4. Electromagnetic Stimulation: This non-invasive approach promotes muscle contractions and enhances muscle tone.

* These are general approaches and not fixed guidelines

In conclusion, by breaking the silence, seeking help, and committing to professional pelvic floor training, athletes may prevent sports incontinence, regain control, and continue to pursue their passion for sports without fear or embarrassment.

Remember, your health and well-being matter. Don't let incontinence hold you back from achieving your athletic dreams.
